Laser Engineer

About the Role

As the Ultrafast Laser Engineer you will spend the majority of your time building and orchestrating the production of ultrafast Ti:sapphire laser systems and nonlinear frequency conversion systems, with up to 25% of time supporting installation and field service of our laser systems. You will be an integral member of a highly accomplished team bringing the most advanced ultrafast laser technologies to the market.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Integrate, test, and optimize ultrafast lasers and harmonic generation systems, including troubleshooting
  • Record data and notes for internal and customer-facing documentation
  • Build and test optical subsystems and develop work instructions in coordination with the Production Manager and Product Managers
  • Install completed systems at customer sites throughout the world
  • Support customers with fielded systems through remote technical support and onsite visits
  • Use data from customer service to identify areas for engineering improvements and collaborate with the engineering group on solutions

Requirements and Qualifications:

  • Laboratory experience with lasers and high-harmonic generation or closely related field
  • Ability to work successfully both independently and within a team, and coordinate with multiple internal and external stakeholders
  • Experience with ultrafast laser diagnostic equipment.
  • Experience with assembly, alignment, and troubleshooting of lasers and complicated optical setups.
  • Knowledge of laser technology, laser and optical design and modeling, optical components and materials from UV to IR, and optical metrology and measurement equipment.
  • Familiarity with diffraction gratings, polarization optics, reflective optics, beam telescoping, and general laser principles.
  • Excellent understanding of the interplay of structural, optical, and thermal design features on system performance.
  • Experience with high-vacuum and/or ultra-high vacuum systems
  • Ability to travel 25% of time to install and service fielded laser systems, including international travel.
  • Outstanding communication, technical writing, and time management skills.
  • BS degree in optics, physics, or related engineering discipline

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with manufacturing scientific equipment
  • Experience through education and/or professional experience building fs-class laser systems in a production environment.
  • Experience with engineering documentation, bill of materials, work instructions, and assembly process documentation for new products.
  • Experience with design for manufacturing and design for cost.
  • Experience in applications engineering.
  • Coding ability in language such as Python, Matlab, or LabVIEW
  • Customer relationship management and field installation/service experience.
  • MS degree in optics, physics, or related engineering discipline

 

Salary Range: $50-80k, depending on education and experience.

Scientist - Nonlinear Optical Systems

About the Role

The Nonlinear Optical Systems Scientist will join the team that is responsible for the design and development of KMLabs’ high harmonic generation (HHG) product line. In addition to contributing to the design and improving the products, the role is responsible for supporting the production team on building the products and supporting the sales and account management team on closing deals.

In this role, you will develop a deep understanding of the science behind our products and a strong practical knowledge of how to optimize and implement optical solutions. This knowledge will make you a key member of the business in our efforts to develop our cutting-edge products and help our customers be successful with their research and industrial projects.

As a Scientist in this small business, you will be called on to support all aspects of the product development. It will also call for hands-on work with supporting installations and ongoing customer support and solving production issues.

  • Contributions to the development of the HHG product line.
  • Collaboration with internal stakeholders to develop new products and future iterations of our existing products.
  • Coordination and contribution to the go-to-market activities to support introductions of new products and upgrades
  • Participation in sales calls and leading technical conversations with customers and prospects.
  • Using your expertise in HHG and EUV to design solutions for our customers’ specific needs.
  • Support the production team through the full manufacturing lifecycle including supplier sourcing to supporting onsite installations and field service.

Requirements and Qualifications:

  • PhD. or M.S. in physics or deep scientific operational experience
  • Laboratory experience with lasers and high-harmonic generation or closely related field
  • Experience with manufacturing scientific equipment
  • Strong time management and organization skills
  • Strong project management and supervision skills
  • Ability to work successfully with multiple internal and external stakeholders
  • Exceptional ability to communicate complex concepts clearly

Salary Range: $60-140k, depending on education and experience.
