Ultrafast Ti:Sapphire Laser Engineer

What You Will Do:  As the Ultrafast Laser Engineer you will spend the majority of your time building and orchestrating the production of ultrafast Ti:sapphire  laser systems, with up to 25% of time supporting installation and field service of our laser systems.  You will be an integral member of a highly accomplished team bringing the most advanced ultrafast laser technologies to the market.

Required Skills:

  • Experience through education and/or professional experience building fs-class laser systems in a production environment.
  • Experience with engineering documentation, bill of materials, work instructions, and assembly process documentation for new products.
  • Experience with design for manufacturing and design for cost.
  • Experience in applications engineering.
  • Customer relationship management and field installation/service experience.
  • Experience with ultrafast laser diagnostic equipment.
  • Experience with assembly, alignment, and troubleshooting of lasers and complicated optical setups.
  • Knowledge of laser technology, laser and optical design and modeling, optical components and materials from UV to IR, and optical metrology and measurement equipment.
  • Familiarity with diffraction gratings, polarization optics, reflective optics, beam telescoping, and general laser principles.
  • Excellent understanding of the interplay of structural, optical, and thermal design features on system performance.
  • Ability to travel 25% of time to install and service fielded laser systems.
  • Outstanding communication, technical writing, and time management skills.

  • Experience with high-vacuum systems.
  • Experience with frequency conversion and nonlinear optics.
  • Product manufacture and design in an ISO-compliant quality management system.


  • Degree in optics, physics, or related engineering discipline (BS or MS).

Electrical Engineer - Laser System Development

The Senior Electrical Engineer will spend the majority of their time architecting, designing, and prototyping control assemblies and subassemblies with analog, digital, and power distribution content for next-generation femtosecond laser systems.  Additional activities include  embedded and control software development, assembly, integration, and test documentation, supplier management, transfer to manufacturing, and troubleshooting complex electronics and system problems.

General Requirements:

  • BS in Electrical Engineering or related field; advanced degree desirable
  • 2+ years of control and electrical system architecture and subsystem design and development for complex commercial or scientific instruments; laser system experience desirable
  • Experience coordinating development of firmware to control and monitor a number of optical and electrical components within one integrated system
  • Experience with entire product development lifecycle from design through prototyping, debugging and manufacturing phases
  • Experience meeting objective project timeline and costs
  • Experience managing electronic component suppliers and contract manufacturers
  • Capable with LabVIEW for control software development
  • Skilled at troubleshooting and resolving electronics related system issues
  • Experience developing assembly, integration, and test documentation and hardware specifications
  • Electrical assembly box architecture, with thermal management understanding
  • Experienced in analog/digital/RF low noise design, simulation and implementation
  • Substantial experience in power electronics
  • Experience with schematic capture and PCB layout
  • Experience with Altium, Autocad, Solidworks desirable
