Laser Scientist / Engineer

About the Role

KMLabs is looking for a versatile scientist/engineer to assist in our R&D and commercial activities in ultrafast lasers, and extreme ultraviolet/ vacuum ultraviolet light sources. Our immediate need is for someone with experimental laser experience to perform SBIR/STTR-funded research in fiber-based ultrafast lasers. However, as a small company we are looking for people who seek new challenges, can productively multi-task, and who are interested in growing into new roles including product development, product management, and novel R&D proposal development. As such, you will carry through a deep understanding of the science behind our systems into a fully realized commercial product.

Immediate Duties & Responsibilities:

    • Perform experimental R&D in ultrafast fiber and free-space laser technology.
    • Collaborate with our existing team to develop short wavelength laser sources.
    • Work with optomechanical and electronics designers at KMLabs to develop well-engineered products based on R&D successes.
    • Prepare research progress reports for sponsors and develop proposals for new R&D funding
    • Lend expertise to KMLabs' sales and business development efforts.

Minimum Requirements and Qualifications:

    • PhD in related field or several years directly relevant work experience
    • Hands-on experience with ultrafast lasers
    • Exceptional ability to communicate complex concepts clearly
    • Strong time management and organization skills

Preferred Qualifications:

    • Experience with ultrafast laser development, especially fiber-based platforms
    • Experience with nonlinear optics and high harmonic generation
    • Experience with fiber-based frequency combs
    • Experience with optical system packaging and productization
    • Familiarity with <200 nm light sources, including vacuum beam propagation
    • Project management experience and skills
